The story

On August 20, 1989, José and Kitty Menendez were shot to death in the den of their Beverly Hills mansion. For months the killings looked like a mob hit; then a therapist's tapes surfaced, and the case became the trial of the decade — two young defendants, an inheritance motive, and a claim that years of sexual abuse had made this, in their telling, kill or be killed.

The season is built around that contradiction. It gives the brothers' account its full weight — including the hour-long, near-real-time Erik monologue that became the series' most discussed episode — while never letting the audience forget how much money was at stake, or how differently the same evidence landed with two juries.

The real brothers remain incarcerated as the case continues to move through California's parole system, and the season's release pushed the trials back into public debate. The dramatization compresses, invents, and argues — treat it as a case for the defense and the prosecution at once, not a transcript.
