The story
Ed Gein was convicted of killing hardware store owner Bernice Worden in 1957 and long suspected in the 1954 disappearance of tavern keeper Mary Hogan. When deputies searched his farm, they found a house assembled from the dead — and a small town that had spent years treating him as odd rather than dangerous.
The season follows Gein from his mother's deathbed to the asylum, and it makes a second argument in parallel: that Norman Bates, Leatherface, and Buffalo Bill are all, in one way or another, Ed Gein. So the story cuts between Plainfield and Hollywood — Hitchcock on the set of Psycho, Tobe Hooper behind a chainsaw — to show a real case becoming pop mythology.
Charlie Hunnam plays Gein against type, Laurie Metcalf plays Augusta as a second horror entirely, and the series freely merges documented facts (the grave robberies, the Worden crime scene) with invented psychology. The horror lineage is real; the inner monologues are the show's.
