The episode
Adeline plans her escape as an affair with a farmhand and a photography career in New York; before leaving, she photographs Ed's corpses, the episode insisting on the camera as the town's eventual mirror. Her mockery of the homemaking class and her red-dressed funeral appearance mark her as the woman Augusta would have condemned first.
New York humbles her — Weegee laughs the photos out of the room — and home is worse: her mother's confession, Ed's refusal, and an ice bath she lowers herself into as if grief were a temperature. The season's coldest image closes the hour.
