The episode

The finale asks what a notorious acquittal is worth. Lizzie has money and a new house; she also has a rhyme she cannot buy off the bookstore shelf, Halloween visitors in costume, and a sister who will not keep living inside the legend. Emma leaves. Maggie comes back through the front door. The series gives them a later life as partners and suffragists — a happiness the show chooses, not a documented second act.

The last cut belongs to Aileen Wuornos. After her execution, the series constructs a meeting that never happened: Lizzie and Maggie waiting to take her somewhere safe, with the line that all is forgiven and understood. It is a closing image, not a historical claim. For what the show decides, and what the 1893 jury decided, see the ending explainer.
