Carnival

The series jumps forward after the verdict. Lizzie has money, a new house the show treats as the home later called Maplecroft, and a preferred name — Lizbeth — that the real Lizzie Borden did use in later life. The house is staged as the opposite of Second Street: animals, a cherry orchard, indoor plumbing, a place where nothing is supposed to be afraid. The town does not cooperate.

A guest still wants a killer named. The hour has Lizzie recite the leftover rumors — a later Fall River axe killing sometimes dragged into Borden folklore, the uncle who visited at the wrong time, a rumored illegitimate son — and then shrug them off as stories without evidence. Halloween brings a child dressed as her. A bookstore will not stop selling the legend. Acquittal bought her freedom from a noose, not from the carnival the title names.

Billie Lourd's Emma will not keep living inside that legend. She packs to leave and will not die in a house made of other people's theories. The farewell is the show's: she hopes that someday, on a deathbed, the truth is admitted. Historically the sisters did move to Maplecroft after the trial and did later become estranged. The speech is dramatization.

Maggie has gone west to a husband the series treats as another trap. The hour shows her reach for an axe and stop, then travel back to Fall River. She does not sneak through a basement this time. She walks in the front door and stays. Lizzie asks whether she regrets it; Maggie says no. That reunion — and the later life as partners and suffragists, hosting meetings until the vote is won — is the happiness the show chooses. There is no reliable record that Bridget Sullivan returned to live that second act.

Sarah Paulson's thread, opened earlier in the season, finishes here. The series gives Wuornos a trial, a death sentence, and a lethal injection. In the constructed last image she opens her eyes and finds Lizzie and Maggie waiting to take her somewhere safe. “All is forgiven. All is understood.” Then the gallery curtain closes on the actual execution.

Aileen Wuornos was a real person, executed in Florida in 2002. She has no documented connection to the 1892 household. The meeting is an anthology image — the same “made or born” question the season has been asking — not a biographical fact about either woman.

On screen, earlier episodes have already depicted Lizzie and Maggie as the killers; Carnival assumes that answer and spends its time on the aftermath. In the file, Lizzie was acquitted on June 20, 1893, and the killings remain legally unsolved. Maplecroft, the later estrangement from Emma, and Lizzie's death in 1927 are history. The partnership, the suffrage campaign, the afterlife grace, and the certainty of guilt are the series.
